Many St. John’s members and friend are involved with groups that support fair voting districts via defeating gerrymandering, basic voter information, “common sense gun law” candidates, voter registration, rides to the polls and more.
Below is a list of organizations that you may find worth joining or supporting in even small ways, to help protect democracy, a Unitarian Universalist principle. Each has sub-pages for volunteering or getting involved.
The League of Women Voters – Cincinnati Area.
The League creates and publishes a 101-year old voter guide, now named Vote411 in print, and Vote411.org online. It’s a national, nonpartisan resource for people to use to find out about local candidates, issues, and state-by-state voting rules.
The League also registers people to vote, including newly naturalized citizens, and speaks to groups about elections, and at the state level works for fair voting districts.
In Ohio, Common Cause is co-leading the fight for fair districts that Ohioans voted into our constitution in 2015 and 2018, but that state leaders have not fully followed. It builds coalitions, lobbies, works for government transparency and provides public education regarding voting rights and more.
The Hamilton County Board of Elections
Do you have time to work the polls and attend a half-day of training before Nov. 8? Boards of elections need short-term workers. You will be paid. You’ll find other valuable voting information on this site.
This group advocates for reasonable solutions to gun violence and promotes voting rights, supporting candidates who also advocate for “common-sense gun laws.”
Targeting younger voters, this group promotes voter rights and offers “Democracy Explainers.”
Election Protection has hotlines in several languages to answer voter questions. It signs up volunteers to help with online voter fraud detection, poll monitors, rides to polls and more. It has numerous national partners.
Kentuckians for the Commonwealth
This progressive yet nonpartisan group is partnering with Kentucky UU Justice & Action Network (KUUJAN) for Get out the Vote activities. Many voter resources are on its page.
Join First UU Church to UU the Vote.
There are surely other groups that are active in similar ways. However you can help, even if by making sure you and your family members vote, you contribute to supporting the democratic process.
