UUA Article II Study Commission

Do you recall reading about the ARTICLE II STUDY COMMISSION in our WIDER UU WORLD updates last summer?

What is Article II?  St. John’s is a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Article II of the UUA Bylaws, Principles and Purposes, is the foundation for all of the work of our UUA and its member congregations. It is the covenant to which all of our congregations and pledge themselves when they become members of our UUA.  You can read

Read our current Article II here.

Our current Principles and Purposes were last revised in 1987. The bylaws require we review the Principles and Purposes every 15 years.  It is time for UUs to review and make updates so that we are living into the Unitarian Universalism of the future, a Unitarian Universalism that holds us in times of great need and ethical, moral and spiritual crises.  Therefore, the UUA Board established the Article II Study Commission to consider possible amendments to this Article.

What are the next steps in the Article II revision process?  The Article II Study Commission has been working through the feedback provided during and after General Assembly, and the Commission is now engaging in the next round of drafting. Once again, they would like feedback from UUs all over the country as they work on different sections.  They have scheduled a series of Zoom gatherings this month and everyone is encouraged to join in.  (See below for dates and the link to register.)

Another round of revision will follow, with more feedback sessions in late October/early November. After we let it simmer over the holidays, the Commission will put together their proposal in early 2023 to send to the board. The proposal will be considered in online mini-assemblies before the vote at General Assembly (GA) 2023.  Everyone is invited to participate in this process, whether you are a long-time UU, or just learning about our faith.

By the way, GA 2023 takes place June 21-25 in ‘nearby’ Pittsburgh!  Attending GA is a wonderful way to deepen your knowledge of and engagement with your Unitarian Universalist faith.

Want to learn more?  Rev. Alice Diebel, our sabbatical minister, will be preaching about GA and Article II Sunday, Sept. 25!  Please plan to attend one of these Zoom Sessions with the Article II Study Commission!  Click the link for the date in order to register.
