The Music Program at St. John’s

Music plays a significant role in the worship and life of St. John’s. Sunday worship includes instrumental and choral music carefully selected by our Minister of Music, Dr. Cathy Roma, and our Associate Director of Music, Rachel Kramer, to enhance the service. Since music is very important to us, St. John’s is pleased to offer a choral music program for all ages. Please check out our Choir page to learn more about the

Catherine Roma Scholarship

On January 29, 2006 St. John’s celebrated and honored our minister of music, Dr. Catherine Roma for 20 years of service and building a beloved community.   At that service we announced the establishment of the Dr. Catherine Roma Scholarship – a way to honor and perpetuate her work in the arts and social justice.   The scholarship is open to graduating seniors from the four Unitarian churches in Cincinnati and Walnut Hills, Clark Montessori and the School for Creative and Performing Arts.   Students are nominated by their church or school administrator and then asked to submit a portfolio including a personal statement, resume, and three letters of recommendation.   They are selected from their church or school for demonstrating outstanding qualities in the areas of arts, academics and social justice.  A committee of judges from St. John’s review the materials, rate the candidates and a recipient is selected.    They are each awarded a $500.00 scholarship that was generously donated into a fund by individuals in Cathy’s honor in 2006.

In 2006 we awarded the first scholarship to Katherine Alexander from Heritage Universalist Unitarian Church.  In 2007, the scholarship was awarded to St. John’s member Jessica Muni.  In 2008 Ann Cheng from Walnut Hills High School was the recipient.  And, in 2009 Haley McDaniel also a Walnut Hills nominee.

This year, I am pleased to announce that St. John’s Will Wagner is the 2010 Catherine Roma Scholarship recipient.  Will was nominated by Elizabeth Wilson and is a graduate of Colerain High School.

It is wonderful reading all of the portfolios and letters of recommendation and the applicant’s own personal statement.  Will’s academic record speaks to his exceptional determination to excel and he was constantly highlighted as a student who demonstrated “leadership, integrity and desire to make a positive contribution”.   He was applauded for his many musical accomplishments all while working part-time, participating in sports programs, taking advanced placement courses and doing volunteer work.  Will’s portfolio and glowing letters of recommendation characterize him as an excellent musician, a model student and generous and caring member of his community - -all attributes of Catherine Roma and the reason for the committee’s selection of Will as the 2010 recipient.  Will has been accepted and will be attending the University Of Cincinnati College Conservatory Of Music this fall and is the son of Claire and Chris Wagner.

Sabbatical

Dr. Catherine Roma, Minister of Music, has completed her Professional Sabbatical and has resumed her job.  While on sabbatical, Dr. Roma compiled an annotated list of music especially significant and accessible to UU choirs across the country.  She was a presenter at the national UUMN (UU Musicians Network) conference in Portland in July 2009.  This document is the culmination of her sabbatical work and the workshop presentation.  Handout

St. Johns also offers a Music Series of excellent performances in our sanctuary. For the 2008-09 schedule and ticket information check out the Music Series page.
